Shark Education Pack

This project was funded thanks to a donation from LUSH Fresh Handmade Cosmetics.

Part of this project involves the participation of the population, for this, a special bulletin board was placed outside the Galapagos office
The idea of the project is to give the Galapagos school children a basic knowledge of and respect for sharks in Galapagos waters.  Fact knowledge as well as lowering the fear for sharks and explaining the need for the shark’s survival in the oceans will ultimately lead to more shark ambassadors. The project is aiming to educate the youth but will be quite suitable for people of all ages. It will also be one of the first publications ever written about sharks in Galapagos that will be available to the general public.

Part of the project is an advertising campaign in the local newspaper Colono supported by daily radio announcements. All ads will later be combined, with additional information, into a book that will be available, for free, to approximately 1,000 school children on Santa Cruz Island.

The project’s advertising campaign was started in June 2010 and will be followed by a teacher’s guide and schoolbook. The schoolbook will be a high quality, full-color 48-page hardcover. After we have gathered the results of the campaign on Santa Cruz Island, we will re-print and distribute more copies over the other islands.

Due to the length of the promotion of this project – in newspaper and on radio, combined with games and contests – there will be a 6-month discussion about sharks in Galapagos. As happens usually on the islands, successful projects are copied by other organizations leading to yet more environmental education.

Outside the Sea Shepherd office we have a big sign on which people can post their comments/suggestions and contributions to this project.

We believe that kids are the Ocean Defenders of the future. The survival of sharks and other species depend on these young people’s understanding and respect for the animals’ vital role in the world’s ecosystem.
